United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that an Eagle Butte, South Dakota, man charged with Sexual Abuse was sentenced on January 23, 2012, by United States District Judge Roberto A. Lange. Jerry Matthew Chasing Hawk, age 52, was sentenced to 131 months in custody, 5 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund.
Chasing Hawk was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 12, 2011, and was found guilty after a federal jury trial in Pierre, South Dakota, on October 19, 2011. The conviction relates to Chasing Hawk’s sexual abuse of an Eagle Butte woman on August 8, 2009, in Fort Thompson, South Dakota.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs - Crow Creek Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Indian Affairs - Lower Brule Agency, and Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement. Assistant United States Attorney Marie H. Ruettgers prosecuted the case.
Chasing Hawk was immediately turned over to the custody of the United States Marshal.
